El Costo de Vivir en Roatan | The Cost of Living in Roatan

Muchos se preguntan cuál en realidad es el costo de vivir en Roatán, desde extranjeros retirados hasta mochileros. Pero por sobre todos, los Hondureños de tierra firme en busca de mejor vida. Muchos piensan que mudándose a esta isla harán mucho dinero debido al alto incremento en el turismo que se da, mientras otros aseguran que en Roatán apenas se puede sobrevivir. 

Pero, ¿es algo de esto cierto? 

Comenzaremos respondiendo algunas de sus preguntas más comunes.

Many ask themselves what is in reality the cost of living in Roatan, from retired foreigners to backpackers. But over everyone, mainland Hondurans in search of a better life. Many believe that by moving to this island they will make a lot of money due to the high increment in tourism that is given while others assure that you can barely survive in Roatan. 

But, is any of this true? 

We will begin answering some of your most common questions.

¿Es la comida traída desde los Estados Unidos?

Si, pero no toda. La mayoría es producto americano traido por los mismos barcos de carga, propios de familias isleñas dueñas de los supermercados. Por esto, en Roatan se encuentra una gran variedad de productos americanos que no se encuentran en supermercados de otras partes de Honduras. 

Is the food brought from the United States?

Yes, but not all. The majority is American product brought by the same cargo boats, owned by the island families who own the supermarkets. Because of this, you can find a variety of American products in Roatan that are not found in supermarkets in other parts of Honduras. 

¿Cuál es el costo de la comida en Roatan?

 Depende. La comida y productos que vienen de Estados Unidos son en su gran mayoría mucho más baratos que estos mismos que se venden en tierra firme, aunque esto no signifique que sean baratos. Los productos traidos desde tierra firme y hechos ahi son mas caros en la isla debido al costo de traslado. Muchos aumentan dependiendo que son, desde 1 Lempira a 22 Lempiras más ya que la isla no produce lo que se necesita. Por ejemplo, la langosta en el mercado de Tegucigalpa se encuentra a 600 Lempiras por dos colas; en cambio en Roatan la langosta se vende como pollo chuco con tajadas y ensalada por tan solo 170 Lempiras en puestos de comida a orillas de la calle. 

What is the cost of food in Roatan?

Depends. The food and products that come from the United States are in it's great majority much cheaper that the same sold in the mainland, even though this does not mean they are cheaper. The products brought from the mainland and made there are more expensive in the island due to the transfer cost. Most increase depending on what they are, from 1 Lempira to 22 Lempiras more because the island does not produce what it needs. For example, lobster you can find two lobster tails in Tegucigalpa's market for 600 Lempiras; while in Roatan lobster is sold as street chicken with plantain and salad for only 170 Lempiras in food stands near the street. 

¿Se gasta mas en energia electrica en Roatan que en tierra firme?

Si. Al igual que en tierra firme también hay diferentes tarifas dependiendo la zona en que se vive, especialmente las zonas residenciales de los diferentes proyectos de desarrollo privados que tiene la isla. Hay varios factores para el aumento de precio en la energía eléctrica. Entre los más importantes están, el combustible, el cual es traido embarcado del exterior del país y la compañía eléctrica es una empresa privada, no una empresa pública. 

Is it spent more in electric energy in Roatan than in the mainland?

Yes. Just as in the mainland there are also different rates depending on the area in which you live, especially on residential areas of the different private development projects the island has. There are several factors for the increment in price in the electric energy. amongst the most important ones are, the fuel, which is brought on board from the exterior of the country and the electric company is a private enterprise, not a public enterprise.  

¿Que tan caro es el transporte en Roatan?

 Hay todo tipo de medios de transporte: lanchas (taxis de mar), taxis, buses. Los precios son similares a los de tierra firme y los medios de transporte son muy accesibles. No obstante, los taxistas deciden subir los precios cuando saben que no se es de las islas, más que nadie a los extranjeros. Los taxis colectivos existieron alguna vez, ahora no debido a la increíble demanda que existe para los taxis no solo por el turismo, también por la falta de automovil propio de varias familias. Los buses públicos si existen, estos tienen rutas como West End-Sandy Bay-Coxen Hole. Estos tienen costos de L. 15 a L. 25 dependiendo de qué tan lejos usted vaya. Los gastos de la gasolina si se tiene carro propio son más altos de lo usual también ya que esta es importada desde Puerto Cortes.

How expensive is transportation in Roatan?

There are all kinds of means of transportation: boats (water taxis), taxis, buses. The prices are similar to those in the mainland and means of transportation are very accessible. However, taxi drivers decide to increase prices when they know one is not from the islands, to foreigners over anyone. Collective taxis existed once, now they don't due to the incredible demand that exists for taxis not only because of tourism, but also for the lack of many family's own vehicles. Public buses do exist, these have routes like West End-Sandy Bay-Coxen Hole.  These have costs of L. 15 to L. 25 depending on how far you are going. The expense of gasoline if you have your own car is higher than usual as well, because it is imported from Puerto Cortes. 

Vida Mejor = ¿Vida más Cara? 

La isla de Roatan es un lugar donde hay todo tipo de ofertas de trabajo, las cuales no son mal pagadas ya que el turismo es el fuerte de la isla. Hasta hace poco no existía un hospital de calidad en la isla, el hospital público no cuenta con los recursos, equipo o fondos necesarios para tratar pacientes. El 15 de Junio del 2016 abrió oficialmente el HCR (Hospital Cemesa Roatan) el cual cuenta con personal calificado y lo necesario para atender a quienes necesiten de ayuda médica, sin embargo el costo de este no es nada barato. Aun asi, Roatan sigue siendo uno de los pocos lugares seguros en Honduras. 

Lo cierto es que aunque se gane bien el costo de vivir en Roatan seguirá siendo alto debido a que la isla no produce mucho y la mayoría de lo que se consume tiene que ser importado desde la costa y otros países.

Better Life = More Expensive Life?

The island of Roatan is a place where there are all types of job offers, which are not wrongfully paid because tourism is the strong suit of the island. Up until a while ago a quality hospital did not exist on the island, the public hospital does not have the necessary resources, equipment or funds to treat patients. On the 15th of June 2016 the CHR (Cemesa Hospital of Roatan) officially opened, which has qualified personnel and what is necessary to treat those who need medical assistance, however the cost of this is not anywhere cheap. Still, Roatan continues to be one of the few safe places in Honduras.

The truth is that even though you make good money, the cost of living in Roatan will continue to be high due to the island not producing much and the majority of what is consumed has to be imported from the coast and other countries.
